The new public courtyard is located in the heart of the Edinburgh’s Old Town and formed part of an initiative
to make the Closes off the High Street more attractive and user-friendly. Between 1997 and 2002, the initiative was extended to
seven other Closes. Improvements included repaving, new lighting, introduction of artwork, conservation and
repairs to adjacent buildings. The works were implemented following a period of public consultation.
